Now that it's been almost two years since the flurry of climate emergency declarations were made by multiple organisations across our region and as COP26 approaches, we took a look at the challenges and the opportunities that have been encountered by public sector organisations in leading climate emergency response at local level. This session featured speakers from a range of local authorities in our region including: Noel Collings Policy Officer at West Yorkshire Combined Authority. Noel Collings is a policy officer at the West Yorkshire Combined Authority where he has a key role in shaping regional policy in response to climate change, energy, green and blue infrastructure and the natural environment. He has been instrumental in the Combined Authority’s award winning approach to tackling the climate emergency, shaping the setting of a regional target and the development of emission reduction pathways to meet the target. He was lead for the regional approach to energy and green and blue infrastructure and his work has led to net-zero being an overarching priority for the region. Mark Whitworth Sustainability and Climate Change Service Manager at Sheffield City Council . Mark Whitworth is the Service Manager for Sustainability and Climate Change at Sheffield City Council, where he is responsible for development of the City’s approach to net-zero carbon, climate resilience and sustainability. In this role he provides strategic support to both the Council and Sheffield’s Green City Partnership Board, working with partners to progress decarbonisation and to develop greater climate resilience in the City. Mark’s background is in sustainability and environmental management and he has held similar roles in several local authorities as well as working in the private and third sector both in the UK and overseas. These roles have ranged from helping to get local community energy projects get off the ground to advising large businesses on environmental management, resource efficiency and decarbonisation programmes. Tim Newton Policy and Insight Officer at Doncaster Borough Council. Tim Newton works for Doncaster Council in the Policy team, supported the Doncaster Climate & Biodiversity Commission 2019 – 20, and subsequently is working on a range of natural environment climate initiatives.
