Yorkshire & Humberside: Threshold breach; an introduction to planetary boundaries

We hosted a special webinar hosted by the Yorkshire and Humberside region on an introduction to planetary boundaries. We are living in a time many people refer to as the 'Anthropocene'. Humans have become the most influential species on the planet, and our actions are having a destabilising repercussion for the complex and interconnected life support systems on Earth. Therefore, there is a critical need to understand the causes of this problem so we can recalibrate our human-environment relationship to prevent further damage and enable a safe environment to live in. The concept of planetary boundaries is one framework that can help us achieve these aims and this opening lecture will provide an understanding of the framework through a contextual overview of the interconnected challenges faced by humanity. This event helped to explain the planetary boundaries framework and its usefulness by looking at examples of where humanity has breached these thresholds and consider possible solutions that can help rectify these breaches, reflecting on the questions that this framework poses for the human-environment relationship. To find out more about the group you can find them on LinkedIn. Speakers: Adrian Gonzalez Lecturer in Sustainability, Department of Environment and Geography, University of York
